Take 2- Naked Old Ladies in the Gym Locker Room

Take 2- Naked Old Ladies in the Gym Locker Room

Readers- Naked Old Ladies in the gym locker room is not a phenomenon exclusive to my gym in the frozen tundra that is the suburbs of Philadelphia.  Apparently, Naked Old Ladies frolic in every locker room known to man, nationwide! They love to be naked, and they love to s…l…o…w…l….y walk to and fro to lockers to bathroom stalls to sinks to scales to lockers again.

Unknown-1

During my probing, I have also learned that Naked Old Men love to bear all in the gym locker room as well. I will have to vet out my resources to gain further intel on this subject.  As you know, my husband wasn’t really down with being naked and chatting with an aging rock star, so he is rather useless to me on this subject matter.  Besides, he hasn’t been to our gym since we signed up in December of ’09, so not sure how I could entice him to canvas the locker room with the promise of socializing with naked Octogenarians.

I received a bevy of email/texts/Facebook posts concerning my last post. (By the way, feel free to leave these in the comment section on my blog. That’s what it’s for. Everyone loves to read comments, especially me. Don’t be shy.) What is so perplexing to me is that many of the women who are sighting these Naked Old Ladies, wistfully report they wish they had the reckless abandon that most of these elderly women have to just hobble about the locker room sans clothes.

So, here it is, people. Enlighten yourself!  You look fabulous!  Besides, it’s not how you look, it’s how you feel.  I double-dog-dare you to go naked in your full glory at your gym locker room tomorrow.

I expect detailed reports.

  1. Yes, it is a common joke of stand-up comedians that old men “let it all hang out” in locker rooms. But so what? Why should anyone be ashamed of their body among their own gender? My theory is that old people come from a generation when shower rooms were always open, no stalls, including dormitories as well as YMCAs and YWCAs. Also, the older you get, simply the less you worry about silly things like “OMG, s/he is going to see me naked!!” And, the older you get, the more you’ve been poked and prodded for various, often undignified medical procedures, and you begin to realize that everybody has bodies in either Model A or Model B, and it’s silly to be ashamed for someone of the same sex as you to see your body.

I also think the reason younger people are more shy about nudity is not only the self-consciousness of the young, but the current young generation in particular has been raised with a heightened sense of danger about molesters, letting anyone see them naked, etc. Plus house are bigger and many kids have private bathrooms, so they don’t even intermingle with their own same-gender siblings the way we older folks did. I worry about the younger generations growing up with body complexes if they think it’s such a horror to see or be seen naked, but we’ll see.

  3. Gina – Chris used to belong to Kirkwood on Rte 3 years ago (it was 2 minutes from his townhouse & very cheap). It was mostly an older population there and yes he always complained about the naked old men in the locker room – lots of them. You need to ask him about it next time you see him. I belonged there briefly too and the older women also enjoyed hanging out in the buff! I don’t see it at ACAC but I don’t use the ladies locker room that often.

    • Maybe at the next elementary school function I see him at, I should scream across the parking lot, “Chris! Tell me all about the naked men in the locker room!”

My spies at ACAC tell me there are frequent Naked Old Women sightings…

I now know why opposite sexed children over the age of 3 aren’t allowed in the locker room…I cannot imagine what my middle child would say…
